learning curve: uriburu dinner party chatter in spanish

The Uriburus are Hepburn family friends. Florencia, Ricardo and Magdelena are siblings (3 out of 11!), and Magdelena invited us over for some tartas. Delicious, especially the onion tarta. We also met a foreign exchange student, Mahalet, who Magdelena is hosting for the summer. Mahalet was not so foreign to us, being from Maryland and all!

The big challenge was trying to appear somewhat interesting in Spanish. Fail, I must’ve sounded like a slow three-year-old, yet it was very encouraging at first. I think the Uriburus spoke slowly at the beginning, so I was understanding everything. And I even interjected in Spanish intermittently! Two hours later, we got comfortable and the conversation sped up to the real bullet train level. Dios mio! I understood every fourth word, and then lost the vocabulary to say anything at all. Brain. At. Saturation. Point.

Oh well, a good start. Hopefully I will be communicating like a full 3-year-old next week.
