Here are some pictures of Chiyoda streets, where we stayed. I’m more than sad to leave Asia, but it’s now time to get back to reality. Well, almost. Colorado is the last stop. Davidson’s cousin is getting married on Sunday, and we are staying with Adeline, my BFF from kindergarten.
Tokyo
another plug, this time for hotel niwa. which was quite reasonably priced and beautifully decorated
We really enjoyed our stay here. The staff was beyond helpful, and the room was small but perfectly planned.
street snaps: ginza
we wake up early for the famed fish market, but not early enough. apparently, all the action happens before 6 am. oh well, everyone else says it’s a must-see

another delicious meal, and some unexpected cross cultural exchange
While very pregnant, India takes us to eat some tea with rice (heavenly) at Ohitsuzen Tanbo in Omotesando. The portions are gigantic for Japan, and the rice is something else. India also introduces some pals over dinner, and it’s nice to have a friends-at-dinner-together vibe in a foreign place. We had to ask about why Japanese like to pose for photos with the peace sign, and were told that the girls now flank their heads with dual peace signs (see Davidson) to make their faces appear slimmer. Wow, it works—Lara Stone better watch out! In the spirit of cultural exchange, Davidson works with Yoko on a Back in the Days pose.
hoping to find the famous harajuku girls, davidson decides to go incognito to draw them out
giant calzone and a new friend
So my favourite St. Nicholas prefect, Lorraine, tells us to hang with Hidei in Tokyo. Turns out he’s fun and funny, and he warns us, “I’m not a food guy, I’m a drinks guy.” We started with sake and delicious Japanese apps, and then moved on to wine and the biggest calzone ever. Four bottles of good stuff later, we took a taxi back and did not wake up in time for the fish market the next day. But who cares when you are enjoying yourself? Yay. New friends are awesome.
interesting ideas on show at this architectural masterpiece
Okay! I get it, everyone here considers every aspect of design. They breathe minimalism! I’m jealous! Also, the show at 21-21 Design_Sight (I’m standing in front of it) in Roppongi Hills was pretty clever. Once again, I would have been more clued in with some working knowledge of Japanese.

and now, a sartorial guest post by davidson
While Tokyo is best known as the mecca of innovative electronic gadgetry, a growing number of sartorial geeks have long followed Tokyo’s direction for men’s fashion. Since I still don’t know the difference between a plasma and an HDTV, I’m more partial to channeling my sartorial geek.
Armed with a list of stores to visit (Hat tip to Owen at Inventory for the suggestion), I did make a pilgrimage to The Army Gym flagship store where I got to enjoy a nerdy moment discussing selvage with my new friend Yuuichi, who kindly posed for a picture.
